Description

This is a silhouette / contour of the Volkswagen ID.3 in the original and facelift version (PA Produktaufwertung). It includes all official rims, too (East Derry, Andoya, Wellington, Sanya).

This work was inspired by: https://www.printables.com/de/model/530806-car-silhouettes-different-models

How to Use

This Printable consists mainly of a single SVG file that can be configured to your liking (ie. changing rims). You have two choices in order to work with this.

The first method is to directly print preconfigured files. The second method is to modify and use the SVG file itself.

Method A: Directly print preconfigured files

There are multiple pre-configured files that can be printed as-is. You can scale the models to your liking.

Just download a file from the preconfigured directory. Change the dimensions to your liking.

If you want, you can add a backplate (see warning below). This can best be done from within your slicer. Maybe try out multi-color?

Warning: Some elements are not connected (like the rim and some of the details of the rim). Please add connections (ie. rectangles or a full backplate) so that they stay connected to the rest of the car. Only ID3_Original.stl and ID3_PA.stl are printable out-of-the-box.

Method B: Build your own

Step 1: Configure the SVG

At first we want to configure the appearance of the car. For this we can use a vector image manipulation tool, for example: https://inkscape.org

Open the id3_for_tinkercad.svg file and open the view for the layers. There you can select between the layers to your liking. Just change the visibility of the layers until you are happy. Please don't do something like mirroring as this can best be done later in the slicer.

Step 2: Open a new Tinkercad drawing

You can use a different tool, but Tinkercad works and is tested: https://www.tinkercad.com

Step 3: Import each layer into Tinkercad

Note: Please repeat this step for each layer from Step 1.

  • Only make this one layer visible in the SVG file and save it.
  • In Tinkercad, click on “Import” and select the SVG.
  • Select a scale of 20% and import.
  • After the import has been done, select the imported form and change the quality to the highest setting.
  • Repeat for the other layers

Step 4: Optionally modify the model in Tinkercad

Optionally, you can now modify your model in Tinkercad if you want. One idea is to change the thickness of the lines by selecting a form and changing the fill mode to “inner line” and changing the thickness.

Warning: Some elements are not connected (like the rim and some of the details of the rim). Please add connections (ie. rectangles or a full backplate) so that they stay connected to the rest of the car. Only the ID3_Original.stl and ID3_PA.stl are printable out-of-the-box.

Step 5: Export your STL

When you are happy with the result, you can export everything via Tinkercad.

How this was built

I've built this by importing a side view image of the ID.3 in Inkscape and then tracing all the lines. The same was done for all the rims.

The following tutorial was used to create the printable STL files: https://www.instructables.com/3D-Print-SVG-Lineart-Inkscape-and-Tinkercad/
