Description
Introducing a wheel and tire combo for RC cars. Designing a 3D printed RC vehicle from the ground up.
Rim is complete, tire may change especially tread pattern dependent on testing. This is designed to be used in a 2WD or 4WD vehicle, with 4WD preferred as the final complete model will use four brushless drone motors, one at each wheel for power.
Rim can be printed with an FDM machine out of any material, but ABS/ASA/Nylon should be used. I have printed my first prototypes with a resin printer using ‘ABS-Like’ resin. Durability is very good, dropped from a 2 story window without shattering. I think this is better than FDM since there are no layer lines on the rim to split on sudden shock forces.
I am still testing the tire, I printed from 95a TPU, but TPE is much better. TPU is flexible enough, but it is still too hard, and the surface is also too hard to provide much grip on concrete. For offroad use, a tread design with chunkier blocks should be fine from TPU, but TPE is definitely needed for road use.
Hardware needed for this is simple, just a 5mm flange. I originally used 6 m3 threaded inserts, but this didn't work as the flange is also threaded, so it was impossible to fully press the flange up against the wheel hub. You'll need 6 m3 socket head, or button top screws and 6 washers. Screw in from the face of the wheel, through it into the threaded flange. The flange is specific to this wheel, as it was the only one I found that locked onto the brushless motor shaft twice, and had 6 threaded mounting holes.
