Description

I take little credit for this cute little creature. One of my talented students, Lucie, introduced me to the Rascal she designed during a summer camp I was teaching. Rascal was a big hit with everybody there. Several other campers spent a portion of their 3DBucks to print Rascal for themselves. I've since discovered versions of this design on a number of 3D sites. In the process I learned that the critter's birth parent is Eero Aarnio. The original Rascal is in fact the Android Dog, currently housed at the Googleplex in Mountain View, CA. I've since added a few flourishments like ears and eyes that some may enjoy, though the original unadorned model will surely remain the most popular of the breed.

Now Lucie's Rascal is featured in an Inventor Studios Tinkercad tutorial -- helping 3D modelers the world over refine their modeling skills. Follow the entire collection to refine your modeling skills.

Good dog, Rascal! Good dog!

Update: Added 123D Make file so you can create a version of Rascal on a laser cutter.

Update: Added STL's of Rascal with ears and another with ears and eyes.

Instructions

Rascal's a troublesome breed. I always print him on a raft. His belly obviously needs copious supports, as do his feet and chin. Once printed, I've sometimes struggled to cleanly remove PrusaSlicer’s supports. But Simplify3D's pop right off. Note though that I use Simplify's manual support editing feature to give extra coverage around the feet and up the legs. My prints have all been with a layer height of 0.2mm.

The fusion 360 file was generated by importing the STL. The cardboard version shown was burned on a Full Spectrum Gen5 Hobby laser cutter from recycled Amazon shipping boxes. The material you use will almost certainly have a different thickness. So be sure to adjust the cut width in the Fusion file and export your own cut plans.
