Description

This finger guard was created after a coworker asked if I could print replacement parts for an old all-purpose / bread slicing machine Graef EH-170 T. The original plastic got brittle and broke, but using the machine without it can be dangerous. Since they have two similar machines in the family, I was able to design this in FreeCad based on an original part.

Caveat

The original had little “poky pyramids” to really grab the food that is being pushed back and forth. This first iteration does not include these for two reasons:

  1. Printability.
In the current orientation, you'd need a lot of support to have the “poky bits” on the build plate. It's the same for a different orientation of the part.
  2. Food safety.
I am not sure if it is good idea to have PLA or in my case PETG pieces poke into food.

I have an idea to split the object into two parts that can be pushed together to allow me to make different “attachments”, but it needs some refinement. And with the first try working ok already, there's no need to rush it at the moment.

Printing

I've printed this prototype in Prusament PETG Recycled because it is less brittle than PLA. For the final part I might use a different color.

“Generate support material” is required for the overhang part. Enabling “Support on build plate only” is enough for that. I used the organic “Style”, but anything else should be fine too.

For a stronger part, I suggest to increase the number of “Perimeters”.
