Description

I made this to feed the filament up from below an IKEA Lack Enclosure and hopefully keep the filament dry. It also works to feed it top down by rotating the PTFE coupler 180°.

I startet out by remixing the Parametric Enclosed Stackable Spool Holder by Desert_Hobo. There's not too much left of the original design.

Main differences:

  • Filament goes out in the back and then upwards
  • Box opens to the front
  • The base part now fits the printing height of my MK3S+
  • Rolls added so I can use different size spools
  • M3 socket cap hex screws used everywhere
  • The latch is reinforced and uses the same M3 socket cap hex screws as the rest of the box
  • The PTFE Coupler part additionally fits an PC4-M10 pneumatic connector on the inside

Printing tips (I'm using PrusaSlicer):

Changes to the box in the photos:
1) The filament outlet in the back is now drop shaped to prevent sagging
2) The corner angle is now 55° instead of 45° because the outermost perimeter of some layers did peel off. This should solve the problem.

Box:

There are STL files for 3 different spool heights, up to 60mm, up to 75mm and up to 90mm. All with up to 200mm diameter. Wider or narrower boxes can be made using the attached f3d file.

Use the 3MF files or split the STL file using your slicer to get the individual parts of the box. The lid is best printed with the hinges facing upwards, see the pictures. In case you have difficulties splitting up the STL files you could try

The seal between the base and the lid should be printed in TPU.

The 2 rolls have a one-layer thick hull which I also printed in TPU - this part is not strictly needed but I always wanted to try the spiral vase setting ;) Inspiration was taken from Pantheon Design Spoolinator by Casey Wong on how to attach the rolls to the box.

All the remainings parts were printed with 0.30mm DRAFT profile.

There is a small compartment where the silica gel can be stored. I had a Malolo's Silica Gel / Desiccant Containers by Malolo lying around and it fit's quite nicely.

Latch:

Keep the part orientation from the STL file and print it with supports where needed. Changing the orientation to a no-supports-needed orientation will result in part breakage, believe me!

0.30mm DRAFT.

PTFE Coupler:

If you want kinda-nice threads use a 0.15mm profile.

The magnetic ptfe joiner is remixed from Join PTFE Tubes Together Magnetically by Xuis to fit 5x3mm round magnets and I made the inner part solid. I also added a small threaded rod to connect the magnetic joiner to the ptfe coupler on the box.

Bearings:

I use hybrid ceramic bearings for the rolls to run smoothly. First I tried some SKF 608-2Z bearings - the spool was turning but the rolls (mostly) don't. I assume that's because they have grease as lubricant and therefore too much friction for this kind of setup. YMMV.
