Stylish plant labels for your garden, herb planters and more!
Two slightly different models based on the same theme
Hopefully tasteful (not too plain nor too kitsch )
Text on the front and back (I suggest putting the genus on the front and the species on the back)
Designed to print in color on a non multi-material printer (using layering)
They use little filament
They are quick to print (< 30 minutes per label depending on slicer settings)
You can print 8 or more of them at once on a Prusa MINI (depends on the models you choose), probably many more on a larger printer
Parametric: Customizable length, width, text and more.
The bigger model (the one with three separate stems on top) is 8mm wide and has bigger decorations. Perfect for visibility in the garden. The smaller model is 6mm wide and has smaller decorations. A bit subtler and very nice for herb planters.
I decided to print mine ~180mm long to fit on my MINI but you can easily make them longer by editing the stick_length parameter.
Usage Instructions
Because there is so much plant variety and languages in the world, I can't provide pre-made STLs for all possible combinations.
Thus, there are two types of files provided:
STLs without text: Write plant names on the text-less labels using a permanent “paint” marker or using a label maker.
Fusion 360 source file: Customize the labels with your own text and export STLs yourself.
To make your own custom tags:
Open the Fusion 360 file, expand the “Sketches” section in the tree on the left and edit the two sketches to enter the name of the plants you have (just double-click on the text in the sketch). The “recto” sketch contains the big text on the front of the tag, and the “verso” sketch contains the text on the rear.
If you do not need text on the back, you can right-click on the last extrusion feature in the timeline on the bottom of the screen and suppress it, which will make it disappear from the 3D model.
Finally, export the STL by expanding the “bodies" group in the tree, right-clicking the body and selecting “Save as STL”.
To get the correct font on Windows
The design uses the Avenir Next font which is distributed with macOS but not Windows (I noticed this after the fact, oops!) To print the design on Windows, you have two solutions:
Switch to another font that you like and adjust the height so that it overlaps the main support bar as in the original design.
Download and install the Avenir Next LT Pro Bold font from here, then open the design in Fusion 360 and choose “AvenirNext LT Pro Bold” in the Edit Text dialog.
Printing Instructions
I printed my own labels with a 0.4mm nozzle. For sharper text (and if you don't mind the much longer print duration), you could use a 0.25mm nozzle instead. You can use the provided 3mf file as a starting point. The file is setup with the appropriate layer height and color changes to obtain the pictured result.
