Light Duty Magnetic Hanger - Eyelet with Extension Pole adapter Install Tool

This is a light duty (~18 lb./8.2 kg pull force) magnetic hanger or eyelet, with an included extension pole adapter tool that fits standard ¾ x 5 ACME attachments (window washer, painter accessories). Its purpose is to provide a temporary and removable eyelet or anchor point, by attaching the hanger to a metal surface. It is specifically designed to be used for temporarily mounting light weight decorations to the steel framework of a standard acoustic hanging/floating ceiling, but it has many uses (see attached photos). In the past, I used spring clips that were difficult to work with, that sometimes damaged the ceiling tiles, and almost always caused particles of the acoustic ceiling tile to fall down on the floor (or in your eyes).

This design requires purchasing the bar magnets which are 60mm x 10mm x 3mm (see the attached photos). These magnets are widely available. The magnets are touted to have a pulling force of up to 18 lbs./8.2 kg, so they can be installed to a ceiling using an extension pole with the adapter. They can be removed by pulling them off, pulling slightly to the side on the cord that is attached to the hanger eyelet. Thus, in many cases, install and removal can be accomplished without using a ladder.

The install extension pole adapter is designed for the hanger to fit even when there is a cord or string attached.

The magnets typically come with, and are designed to be installed with an adhesive, double-sided mounting tape strip.  In addition to these strips, I used 5-Minute epoxy. There is an intentional gap designed between the magnet sides and the inner walls of the hanger. This is to allow the epoxy to squeeze out the sides a bit and adhere to more surface area of the magnet. I first installed the double-sided adhesive strip only to the hanger. Then I applied epoxy to the gaps and sides of the hanger. Then, I inserted the magnet, adhering it with both the the adhesive tape in the middle of the magnet, with epoxy on the sides, in the gaps. The adhesive held the magnet in place while the epoxy dried. The spacing inside the compartment for the magnet is designed for the additional thickness of the adhesive tape. if the adhesive tape is not used, the hanger will need to be sanded down a bit, or the design modified in software, so that the magnet does not sit in the compartment too deep.

The model must be printed with supports, but clean up is fairly easy.

NOTE:

1. I updated the Install Tool to make it more durable. There were two weak spots in the design and when I dropped the pole, one of the arms snapped off. The new design greatly increases the strength of the tool. The original design is strong enough for the purpose that it was intended (to install the hangers), but was not strong enough for incidental impact and damage (me dropping the pole on the adapter end).
