Description
This is a set of replacement frames for avaitor-style red-cyan 3d glasses, marked ‘anachrome.com’ on the side. I could not use the stock frames over my glasses, so I modeled these after a couple of other oversized frames that I had.
A step file has been added to make editing a little easier, as well as an OK-but-not-perfect scan I made of the right lens that I designed around.
I was not able to remove the lenses from the stock frames without destroying the frames.
The fit of the lenses themselves is highly dependent on print orientation and printer tolerances. The fit is extremely fiddly on an FDM printer since the lens retainer needs to be printable, need to hold the lenses well, and needs to allow the lenses to be inserted.
The frames were not designed for easy printing.
I do not recommend this project if you're able to wear the stock glasses as-is, or if you're uncomfortable tinkering with the model. For me this was the only way to get any use from them.
Use split to parts before printing. These are not meant to be printed in place.
I printed the main frame body with the top surface down, angled enough to not need support on the top surface. I used tree supports in Orca Slicer with support only on build plate enabled. You may want to ensure there are additional supports along what will become the bottom edge of the lens cutout.
I printed the temple pieces on edge, with the top side down using supports. This is a not the strongest orientation for them, but leaves nicer surfaces.
See images for print orientations (but you may find better ones).
The hinge uses a piece of 1.75mm filament for the pin. Drill out hinge pin hole with a suitable drill bit for the filament you'll be using for the hinge. I used a #50 drillbit but it happens to be slightly undersized. It can be easier to insert the filament by leaving a drill bit in place through the the body and temple piece to help keep the hole aligned.
Lenses should push in from the front. My lens pair are slightly non-symmetrical, so I found one side had a small gap along the outside edge that the other side did not have.
I'd like to make these changes, but as the glasses are working for me right now, I probably won't continue on them:
