Description

I needed to mount a cable in a fixed position in my DIY device but surprisingly I couldn't find any clip model for my cable thickness. This is why I decided to make a parametric model to quickly generate new cable clips for any cable size when they are needed.

Clips for 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 mm cables and 3 mm screw hole are available as STL and ready to print.

Weak models: clip_thickness = ⅓ of the wire diameter and 4 mm mount.
Medium models: clip_thickness = ½ of the wire diameter and 4.6 mm mount.
Strong models: clip_thickness = ⅔ of the wire diameter and 5 mm mount.
Chamfer models: clip_thickness = ½ of the wire diameter and 5 mm mount.

If you need some other specific model, you will have to use FreeCAD to change some parameters and get your custom model in less than a minute by changing some parameters in the “params” spreadsheet:

All values are in millimeters. Green values are entered manually, yellow values are auto-calcultated, but you can also use manual numeric values there if you need to get some untypical shape. After making the changes in the table, preview your model, click “Clip-Body” in the tree view, press Ctrl-E, save as STL and print.

Print without support, the orientation is as you prefer:

Print one clip in both orientations to select the best one before printing many clips at once. If your test clip has the “squished ellipse effect” in the circular shapes printed in the vertical orientation, you may want to fix this before printing a large number of items. In orientation 1 slightly increase wire_d in the spreadsheet, in orientation 2 slightly increase the screw_d and screw_head_d in the spreadsheet to compensate the ellipse effect.

Version 2 can make chamfered holes by setting the screw_head_chamfer_angle to the required angle value (typically 45 degrees). Set it to 0 to disable the chamfer. You may also need to increase fixer_thickness as well to completely hide the screw head, depending on its shape:

Note 1: it is possible that some values that you enter in the spreadsheet are mutually incompatible and may result in solver errors and shape distortions. This model is simple and not idiot-proof, so if you break it, the fastest solution is to close the broken model without saving and open the original model again to try some different parameters.

Note 2: the model was designed in FreeCAD from realthunder. It relies on some features such as suppress property that is not available in FreeCAD 0.20 and will not work there! But you can easily adapt this model for FreeCAD 0.20 if you still use it :)

It is a little but a really useful thing - print and enjoy! Photos of your makes are welcome!
