Description

This drill guide is designed for a Dewalt DCD776-EX but should also work for drills with collars around 54mm. It fits by friction and should push on and pull off.

It boasts a primitive but effective depth gauge. Just twist to raise or lower.

Using depth gauge

  1. Insert bit
  2. Slip collar on drill (Gauge should run along the top of the drill)
  3. Place drill on the job and let springs take the weight
  4. Adjust bit, so it is just touching job
  5. Twist gauge, so that distance from the top of the foot is the depth you need

Shopping list

You will need.

  • 2 x 8mm x 200mm stainless steel rods. (You could substitute any steel, aluminium or even threaded rod)
  • 2 x springs Mine were 14mm in diameter and 75mm long. You may need to experiment with what you can get locally)
  • 1 x threaded rod 3/16 or M4 (If M4, you may need an additional m4 locking screw)

Construction

Rods should push into the foot. Hammer gently if needed.

Rods will be initially stiff through the collar. Work gently and/or add silicon grease, so they slide firmly but smoothly.

How I Designed This

I designed this job from scratch but first studied several existing designs to work out the best approach and collect ideas. These makers included:
