Most of the modular sand casting molds are difficult to cast, and machine. This one is very easy to sand cast
- 2 Part mold (use a pattern board, or pins to align the two halves)
- 1 Mold will create half the cast (eg a cope or a drag though both are the same in this model)
- I drilled a 8mm hole through each handle (make sure the cope and drag are aligned and drill both together) for a M8 partially threaded bolt that is cut down to be used as pins.
- If you get binding on the pins then cut / file one of the 4 holes into an 8mm slot which will fix this but still keep accuracy.
Two issue to be aware of:
- These metal flasks can get hot after being used. You may need gloves to handle.
- To make it easy to pull these patterns from the sand, it has a draft. The result of which is the when being used the top half of the sand supports the bottom half (which is not ideal). I've not had issues with sand falling out from the flask once rammed up but it is worth keeping in mind and you may need to use a board to support the sand especially on larger / heavier castings.
Update (2024/04/21) : I've added a “merged” version of the patterns where the individual components are one solid. The others you can moves the items around or scale them individually.
