Description

I started trying to use the “Walther PDP Compact Magwell-Compatible Baseplates”, but was unhappy with the retention. It felt like the base plate could come off accidentally. I haven't retained any dimensions or design features from that design.

Retention Features

  1. Magazine body audibly snaps into place when fully seated.
  2. Base plate is tight against the body, generating friction to make removal require force.
  3. Spring slips into recess. This is redundant in case the first two fail.

Other Features

  1. Added overhang to permit easier grabbing if necessary.
  2. Much more material around the magazine body.

Strength Testing

I tested the strength of the models by inserting them halfway into the magazine and applying force until it snapped. The Walter PDP model above snapped on the layer lines above the slot. My model snapped across the whole width of the base plate, and took more force.

Print Details

I printed out of Black Polymaker ABS with a 0.4mm nozzle at 0.2mm layer height. As noted in the included picture I added support at the top where bridging was required. Those are just my defaults, other settings likely work.

Future Improvement Ideas

  1. It would be interesting to see how this worked in TPU. I'm not sure if it would hold up to the constant strain of the spring.
  2. The strength of the design could be augmented by running a metal screw down the length.
