The lamassu is a celestial being from ancient Mesopotamian religion1. It is depicted as a hybrid monster with the bearded head of a mature man, the crown of a god, and the winged body of either a bull or lion2. The lamassu appears frequently in Mesopotamian art1. It was also recognized as a protective deity in the Assyrian culture of ancient Mesopotamia and later spread to the Persian Achaemenid Empire3.
