Description

A gift created using a 3D scan of a Madagascar Ammonite Fossil.

Print information:

  • Base: print flat with screw holes touching print bed
  • Fossil: can print flat, but will look better printed at 45-60 degrees. Use proper supports for best stability. I added solid support geometry (Add Part) in PSlicer for extra supports. (See 3MF)

Assembly:

  • Attach the fossil to the from of the base with 3x M3x10 bolts.
    • 3mm printed pegs could also be used, but will be more difficult to install.
  • Optional:
    • Add weighted objects into the holes under the bottom of the base. I used scrap nuts I had laying around.
    • Measure the screw and weight holes on your base print. Create and press fit plugs to fill the holes. Example files are added but may or may not fit your particular print properly.

3D Scan information from Natural History Museum Vienna:

3D scan of a fossilized ammonite from the Lower Albian (Lower Cretaceous). The mother-of-pearl shell is still visible, which makes this piece special. This ammonite was found in Ambatolafia within the Mahajanga Basin in the northwest of Madagascar. Take a look at a 3D scan of a big block full of fossilized ammonites from the same location here.

This fossil cannot be found in the exhibition of the NHM Vienna. Some other beautiful specimens of this kind can be found in Hall 8 of the NHM Vienna.

Specimen: Aioloceras besairiei (Collingion, 1949)

Inventory number: NHMW-Geo 2021/0021/0001

Collection: Natural History Museum Vienna, Geology & Palaeontology Dept., Mesozoic Coll. (curator: Alexander Lukeneder)
