Description
I used to store my tools in a cut in half, plastic container. I would often find myself digging through them trying to find the desired one (usually at the bottom). This was annoying, and sometimes a little dangerous when the cover was not on the X-acto Knife :0 . I figured that an organizer would solve the problem, and be fun to design. I had seen various tool organizer designs, but they were all kind of huge, or bulky, and were designed to hold a wide variety of tools. They looked like they would eat up a ton of filament to print. I wanted a simple organizer or caddy that would hold the tools that I use most often, and one where the tools are the main focus. I came up with this custom tool organizer, and it works well (for me).
Some people might see this design and ask why I didn't include slots for nozzle cleaners, wrenches, hex tools, etc. The answer is simple. I use those tools very infrequently, and I can get them out of my storage box when I need them. I wanted to have available, at my fingertips, just the tools that I regularly use, most of which are for the post printing process. I guess that I kind of broke my own rule when I included the scrapers, because if I am patient and let the PEI build plate cool, I seldom need to scrape off anything. So, I could have left those out, or only included a slot for one scraper. The glue stick is another tool that I don't use very often, especially when I print on a texture PEI plate (and I am patient :) ). Also, there are two hobby knives (X-acto and Helix); I could have just accommodated only one of those.
The scrapers are here:
Some people might wonder why I designed the stepped shelves for the miniature files, instead of just making vertical holes for each. This design helps the organizer to be a little more stable, and it is less likely that I would break one of the files with this design (the miniature files are quite brittle and snap easily).
I designed a small tray that holds 5 filament clips (under the files); these clips can be found at:
.
I acknowledge that people have a wide variety of tools that they prefer to use. It is unlikely that another 3D printing enthusiast would use the exact same tools. Thus, this design is very customized. However, I thought that I would share it because it might give someone an idea on how they might design their own custom tool organizer in a minimalist way.
PS: No, I do not store the tools on top of my P1S's glass cover (see attached photo); I put them there to show sizing perspective.
