Description

Hi there, my favourite people!

I have a bunch of printed coasters that I use every day. I tend to accrue mugs and glasses on my desk, each sitting neatly on a printed coaster from the stack in the corner. They're one of those things that turn out to be unexpectedly practical!

A while back, I designed some patterned coasters for multimaterial printing, and I'd had a thought floating around in the back of my mind that an assembly version would be superior (and more fun, too), and here we are!

The coasters are comprised of a base that has a threaded rim, a top plate that threads into the base, and a bunch of colourful tiles that get sandwiched in between.

Assembling and printing the Fragment Coasters

For each coaster, you 'll need to print:

* Fragment Coaster Base

* Upper Plate (of whichever pattern)

* A set of middle tiles, or alternatively the complete plate version for just a single colour.

In terms of printing the middle tiles:

* The hex pattern has three different shapes, and the file names indicate how many of each you'll need (or you can just count in the pictures )

* The rays pattern has a unique model for each tile, so just print one of each.

* The zigzag pattern likewise has a unique model for each tile, so again just print one of each.

You'll probably want to assemble the coaster upside-down. Place the upper plate upside down, so the patterned part is lifted up, fit the tiles into the pattern, then screw the base on from above.

Print Description

The coasters are assembled after printing, so you'll want to make sure things are nice and neat so that everything fits properly.  The tolerances are not quite as generous as they might be on a model in which parts move regularly, so neatness is extra-important!

Print Dimensions

The coaster base occupies 94mm x 94mm and is 6mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

While you could scale these up without too many concerns, there will obviously be impacts on the neatness of fit of the parts.

Print Orientation

All the parts print right-way-up, including the interior bits.  You'll probably want to assemble things upside-down, though!

Further Thoughts

I almost forgot to mention the caddy! It'll hold four coasters, and this time it's a vertical one, just to show off your stylish coaster filament choices!

Happy printing!

xoxo

Sven.
