Description
I have always been a bit annoyed at having to use an external adapter for any non-Cubicon brand filaments on my Cubicon Single Plus printer. But recently I noticed that Cubicon-branded filament is pretty rare, so I finally decided permanent modification of my internal spool-holder was on the table.
This mod requires PERMANENT modification of your printer, by cutting out the internal spool hold assembly, and replacing the plate on the inside of the body with a new part that has an integrated shaft.
The integrated shaft is sized for the tiny Taulman3D spools, but has no room for a clip to use the for the arm. The included 55mm sleeve is designed to fit my Hatchbox and Bambu lab filament spools (as well as many others), and has an integrated catch for the arm.
It is critical that the holder plate with the small shaft be printed in a strong filament. I used PA6-CF (Carbon Fiber Nylon). As Nylon supports are nearly impossible to remove, I created a no-support version of the plate. PLA would probably be usable if you use proper settings to strengthen it, but remember the stress will be along the layer lines, so layer adhesion is key!
The Sleeve should have a smooth finish as the spool will rub against it as it turns. I used ABS with 15% infill, except at the clip, which I used 100% infill. I'd also recommend prohibiting supports for the inside-hole (bridging over it worked fine for me).
The sleeve is meant to fit snugly on the shaft, so note you may need to compensate for shrinkage of your part, or sand down the shaft to get it on.
NOTE: This is the first model I've ever designed in Fusion 360, so there are certainly areas for improvement.
