Custom Samples with Box

Design by R_vdk

Application / Functions

I know there are a lot of good and decent Filament samples and boxes, but I felt as none of them really suited my needs. I created one where both custom filament samples and infill samples could be stored. I wanted to create a box with a hidden hinge (first time trying this) and wanted a look that was as clean as possible, while still preserving function. As testing continued, I found that in different circumstances different types of locks where needed, so I created 3 versions.

For the samples, I went with the following features:

  • 120 x 30 x 3mm → can be measured and checked for printer accuracy
  • Holes top-right: little openings to check for accuracy, quality, geometry
  • Text: indented text to check quality and accuracy
  • Variable layer-heigth: to check quality, surface-finish and see-through properties

What do you need?

To print a complete set, you need the following:

  • Filament (Yeah, I know, off course) - At least 200g for the box
  • Axle/steel rod 2x200mm (or 155mm at least, will provide extra options in the future)
  • Magnets - 5x2mm (curently, will provide extra options in the future)
  • Patience, because you will have to run through every filament ;)

How to

Firstly, choose which option suits you best. To aid your printing and try to avoid warping, I added tabs to every version of the box ass well. For me this worked greatly.

  • Download preferred model (hint: the tabs work great)
  • Slice to your preferred settings, my settings can be found below
  • Don't forget to print the little insert piece!
  • Assemble top and bottom, inserting your rod into the hole from the side of the top
  • push in the little insert (Use glue to fix permanently)
  • Print a sample of every filament you own. Don't forget to dry your old ones first
  • Optional: Add the magnets with the help of some superglue and clamp down
  • Wait for everything to dry and enjoy!

Some tips:

  • I've added a divider that you can print to organize the inside of the box a little bit
  • Don't be afraid to use brims. Removing them is less unpleasant than a failed print
  • make sure your first layers are impeccable, any defects will result in a less than optimal result.
