Description

A static grass applicator is a required tool to create good looking dioramas. Unfortunately professional ones are very expensive, so I made my own.

Required parts:

  • Negative Ion Generator, 6-8kv small model such as this one:
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0869Q6N6N
  • 3-Pin Toggle switch, with LED:
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0CBPVQTNQ
  • Fine metal wire mesh:
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0B5GSG453
  • A 12V power adapter, preferably 1-2A
    https://www.amazon.de/dp/B0BG2TC56Z
  • a 30-35mm diameter rubber o-ring, 2-2.5mm diameter
  • some superglue
  • some electric wire (+- 50cm should be enough)
  • a small nail or thick needle
  • some heatshrink

Assembly is fairly straight forward. Print all 5 parts, in PLA, PETG, ASA, … They should all be oriented in the stl already and do not require supports.
Simply glue the handle to the shaker body with some superglue, using the alignment plug to ensure the handle is nicely centered.
If you want, you can glue the alignment plug in place from the bottom, but this isn't required.
Put the rubber o-ring around the groove in the handle cap to allow it to snap into place.

Then simply thread the positive wire from the handle through the hole and connect it to the mesh.
For detailed wiring & assembly, this is pretty much identical to this great video by Luke Towan:
