So… this is a weird one.

I wanted to add a VOC monitor on top of my A1 Mini.  Barely knowing Fusion360 and liking Gridfinity, I went with “remix another model” before deciding to rebuild from scratch 4 or 5 times.

The idea here is to be able to drill through the center of a 2x2 screw-together base plate by Kyle Warren to attach it to the top of the A1 Mini's mast/z-axis.

The “top” and “lock” are inspired by the design by LwFactory for the A1 Mini handle.  Basically, you remove the top bolt from the front of the A1 Mini z-axis and an additional 3 under the cap. The top fits back in place using the 3 factory bolts, and the lock slides in to line up with the z-axis bolt at the top.

I'd like to clarify that while I originally did try to remix the model by LwFactory (at the time I think the license was different?), I wound up needing to make it all from scratch, in the end.  I also wound up making a number of changes from that design.  So, I'd say this isn't a remix of their model.  I hope they'd agree…

I decided to remix the plate to make life easier on everyone.  It also uses the same 4-40 bolts and inserts as the regular plates do.

  • 4-40 heat set inserts
  • 4-40 socket head cap screws

Of course, you do not NEED to use the bolt and insert.  You can also just go ham with the Gridfinity 6x2 magnets.

  • 6x2mm magnets

The top will fit 8 magnets in double-stacks, while the “lock” will take another 4, also in double-stacks.

The base plate will also take an additional double-stack of magnets on the underside of each hole.  So you can essentially have 3x magnets per magnet slot + the 2x in the top/lock… just a lot of overkill, all around.

Magnets might need a little… convincing.  Either add them fresh off the plate or get a heat gun and some super glue.  No matter how you slice it, it wasn't fun.

Between the mounting options, you do not need to do both, but I feel better knowing the bolt is also in there.

Print…

  • without supports
  • 0.2 layer height - 0.28 works but I wasn't very happy with the results
    • 0.2 mm is what the design and the export are currently set to
    • 0.24 worked okay, but wasn't drastically slower than .2mm
  • 3 or more wall loops
  • up the infill to be a shade over comfort
    • I did 30%
    • small parts on an active device - may as well
  • Orientations
    • Top - grid & magnets facing UP
    • Lock - magnets facing DOWN
    • Grid - Exactly like you'd expect: up is up; down is down

The F360 file is included for the purpose of remixing and… mockery.  It was my second “project” so… it has some issues.  This is also where I had some PC + Fusion stability issues that brought me to, “It works.  I'm done!”
