Description
I wanted my BD-1 to light up without the hassle and cost of using an actual LED matrix. To achieve this, I made this light plate and projection mount that works with standard 5mm LED's, projecting the light evenly at the back plate. I have this wired up along with other LED's and a 9V battery.
This is based on a droid model from a seemingly-obsolete seller, 3DPRINTSTUDIOEK on Etsy. I wish I could link to the exact BD-1 STLs I purchased, but it appears that they are no longer listed.
UPDATE 2024/11/18: Thanks to @KallvinHobbs_1416227, the BD-1 STLs I used have been found on Cults3d here!
Printing
This is a weird one to print due to the floating LED mounts. I ended up using snug supports and carefully removing them from the bottom plate. It worked well enough and I'm happy with the results:
I also highly recommend filament swapping to make the middle bit block light for the matrix effect to look good. I used white for the bottom and top, and black in the middle to block light:
I printed this in Prusament PLA on my MK4 without issue. It is a snug fit for the LED's, but you can always make the holes a bit bigger if needed.
