All parts print in the default model orientation without supports in PLA. Print one bottom and one top part of a given size once. I recommend a layer height of 0.20 mm, but others should also work.
There are pre-made models for the following solder spools:
| brand | weight | wire diameters | spool diameter | hole diameter | spool height |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Kester | 1 pound | 0.5 mm (0.02") 1 mm (0.04") 1.5 mm (0.06") 3 mm (0.12") | 63 mm (2.48") | 19 mm (0.75") | 56 mm (2.2") |
Wire diameters always refer to the maximum wire diameter you can use. For example, if you print the model with a solder wire diameter of 1.5 mm, you can use any solder with a thickness of 3 mm and below.
Feel free to adjust the parameters (see Parameters section below) or request a different size in the comments, providing the information in the table above and I will add it.
You can modify this design in Fusion 360 (the free version is enough) using parameters to make it fit your needs. Download the Fusion 360 design file (in “Design Files” at the bottom of the downloads), open it, and then you can change the parameters by clicking on Solid → Modify → Change Parameters.
These are the parameters you most likely would want to change:
| Parameter name | Description |
|---|---|
| height | Height of the spool measured from one flat side to the other flat side. |
| inner_diameter | Diameter of the hole in the middle of the spool. |
| outer_diameter | Outside diameter of the spool. |
| solder_thickness | Maximum thickness of solder wire that can go through the hole. |
| tolerance | Increase this if your spool doesn't fit or you can't close the two parts together. Lower this if you feel the spool fits too loosely. |
| thickness | How thick the walls should be. |
More parameters are available if needed which are described in Fusion 360.
