Description

I saw a few remixes of this Noctua prototype inspired design and a comment on one about how models closer to the prototype had higher air speed than the Major Hardware https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4911660 model.

I printed https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4931576 by Th3Hippy and measured an air speed of 2.7 m/s @ 300 mm and 2.3 m/s @ 600 mm.

I also printed https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4912018 by jadert and measured 2.8 m/s @ 300 mm and 2.3 m/s @ 600 mm.

I noticed the vents in the second one were larger and less constricted than both the Major Hardware and Th3Hippy design. I also noticed all designs had the fan cross braces in the vent holes.

So as a test I made my own design that has vents the same shape as the fan opening and made the vents straight and not constricted. I measured an air speed of 3.0 m/s @ 300 mm and 2.6 m/s @ 600 mm.

I also created two cases for the fan and two variations. They are tricky to get on since the tabs in the corners like to bunch up the rubber bumpers or gasket. I found it easiest to put the fan in the rear case first and then put the assembly on the font and pull the shock mounts to cinch it on. If you insert the fan at slight angles in each corner it works best. The case should sit flush with the front plate, and will take a little force and finesse to snap on.

There are also versions without the snap tabs in the corners if you want to use screws to secure instead.

08/23/2021 The vents are easy to snap off if you pull to hard on them. I snapped mine. Apply torque to the plate and never the vents. I added a bevel to the point of contact to help strengthen the vents.
