Description
Drip tray for Weber Q BBQ's. These plastic trays replace the disposable aluminium trays that sit in the slide in aluminium tray under a Weber Q series BBQ. The trouble with the disposable aluminium trays, (or just using aluminium foil) is that it sets up a galvanic reaction with the aluminium slide tray … This eventually puts holes through both trays and then hot fat drips onto the ground / patio / pavement. The disposable aluminium trays (not cheap either) only last a little while and then they hole and drip again.
So I created some tray designs that I then wrap the inside in aluminium foil and add some BBQ fat absorbing pellets to. I use “fat-sorb” from Bunning. Every year or so I throw away the fatty pellets and foil and reline it and add new pellets.
This plastic tray remains clean and untouched and as it electrically insulates the foil from the lower slide in aluminium tray, so no holes. The plastic tray will last for decades. Even if you have holes in the aluminium slide tray it doesn't matter as the plastic tray doesn't leak.
I print the trays in high heat material, I use ABS or ASA. However these don't actually get that hot as there is a constant stream of cool air coming up into the vent and up to the burners. I have not had these trays burn or deform in any way after 2 years of use, and I BBQ's every day or two.
There is a version of the tray with wings … as well as one without … I use the one with wings as I can wrap the foil around them.
I print this with 0.8mm nozzle 0.4mm layer height and 25% infill (but it doesn't matter as it's thin enough that there is no infill). I use the Tecor ABS and ASA and have had no issues.
These trays are quite robust and I also use them in the workshop and other places where I want to put / contain small tools or fasteners or all manner of things. I use the one without wings for this purpose.
Post your makes and comments so we can see it works for you too.
