Description

A key isn't just a piece of metal to unlock doors. It's a portal, a promise, a whisper of magic. You hold in your hand the very key that unlocked the Land of Oz for Dorothy (well, it got her into a room where she met the robot Tik-Tok). But this isn't the sunny, technicolor Oz of your childhood. This Oz is darker, stranger, a reflection of Dorothy's own troubled dreams.

If you have grown up watching Disney's “Return To Oz," then you might appreciate that this screenplay matches the tone of the novels better than all others. I loved watching this oddball movie as a kid, and I always wanted an Oz key of my own. So instead of paying ~$50 USD for a metal replica, I used my $1000 printer to print an 11-cent bronze colored plastic one. What a deal!

Now, like Dorothy, you can have the key that started it all.

Details

I've included this primarily as a “split” version to eliminate supports. IMO this will provide the cleanest surfaces for FDM printers. You just need super glue and carefully calibrated elephant foot compensation.

  • Because it's small and round, I chose higher detail with 0.1 layers.
  • On the flat surfaces I used ironing to try to diminish the perimeter lines.
  • Very tiny dots of CA glue from end to end should be more than enough.
  • I also included a split version with pins if you want better alignment.

I've also included the key as one piece (probably best for resin printers and FDM printers with good support settings). Since I went as accurate as I could, that means there isn't a really good flat surface to start a first layer. Supports will be needed. If you print the one-piece version and it turns out well, please share what orientation and settings worked for you.
