The speed of descent is too slow to provide the impact needed to release the arms. I'm working on a better solution but I'm leaving these files up so that people can remix if they like.

Easy to print, easy to assemble……. hopefully easy to use. As of the time of posting it's untested but a few people asked me to upload it.
Assembled using M3 screws and nylon nuts. Tighten them down till they're flush and then loosen them just so that the gears can move easily with the force of gravity. A little bit of painters tape to hold the screws into the backplate while you're assembling goes a long way.
The idea behind it is that you set it to it's starting point before you fly away with your rescue drone by rotating the gears to their vertical position, locking the catch into place. Then when you get to your rescue objective, you decrease your altitude so that the bottom of the strip gear strikes your target and this releases the claws arms. Then as you're increasing altitude it pulls up on the strip gear, the harder you pull, the heavier the thing you're grabbing, the harder the claw grips.
If the claw grabs onto anything immovable, decrease your altitude and move the drone so that it slips your strings loops off the end of the channel.

You might consider using a brim on just the top plate. I had a heck of a time getting the prongs of the catch clip to print without lifting. I included a version of the top plate with built in adhesion.
If you change the material it will change the strangth of the catch clip and that may need to be adjusted.
I left the arms and the central straight gear at 2mm thickness because that's what I was printing it at to test it and it worked well enough to lift up a 5 inch quad with a fatty boombattery on it.
You could easily print beefier arms by just increasing their thickness in your slicer. I haven't tested heavier arms though and they may make the mechanism too heavy to be held in it's starting point by the catch clasp that is currently on there.
I'm going to upload the STEP file so you can edit parameters if you want. If you do another make where you've adjust parameters PLEASE upload a make and tell us what worked.
