Description

This is a decorative mezuzah case for your home, with several style and mounting options.

Update 2024-10-15: A set in the larger ⌀18x158mm size is now available.

Design features
  • Large space for the klaf (two sizes: ⌀18x128mm and ⌀18x158mm).
  • Small lip on either end of the opening to help prevent the scroll from falling out.
  • Mounting options:
    • Hidden mounting with either a #6 countersunk wood screw or a finishing nail
    • Screw-through mounting for a #6 countersunk wood screw (might work with a common nail, too)
    • The hidden mount option is angled at 45 degrees so you can attach it on an angle even if you're close to the stop moulding.
  • Style options:
    • Decorative lines
    • Partial decorative lines (interrupted where the shin is)
    • No decorative lines
  • The back is 30mm wide to leave plenty of room if you want to put some 1" masking tape over the opening.

Printing instructions
  • Choose the version you want (consult the table above).
  • Print the .stl file as-oriented (vertically on the print bed).
  • Tips:
    • Use your slicer to hide the seams in the back.
    • You'll probably need a brim, but not any other supports.
    • The reason for the vertical orientation is to give the cylindrical front a more consistent look. You can always try printing it lying down and see what works best for you.
Installation instructions
  • Choose your mounting option (#6 countersunk wood screw, or nail).
  • The two fasteners must be 160mm apart to properly engage the case for the 128mm lengths, and 190mm apart for the 158mm lengths..
  • Positioning instructions and tips:
    • If you're using the hidden mounting version with screws, you can also print a screw-through version for alignment; the installed position will be the same for both. Plus you'll have an extra to give away as a gift.
    • Pay close attention to the position the fasteners will be in once they slide fully into the case.
    • The position is slightly different for screws and nails, but both are still 160mm/190mm apart (depending on if you are using the 128mm/158mm sizes).
    • Check that you have no obstructions on the door frame that will prevent you from sliding the case into place.
    • Test the fastener depth by sliding the empty case over it and checking for snugness.
  • Insert the scroll into the case.
  • Recite the blessing.
  • Slide the case over the fasteners.
  • If the fastener depth must be adjusted after you have said the blessing, please consult your preferred rabbinical authority to determine if an additional blessing is required.
Notes
  • There are lots of little easter eggs (passover eggs?) in the lengths, angles, etc. of various features.
  • I designed this model in OpenSCAD and it's fully parameterized. If you'd like a simple modification for another purpose (e.g., number of vertical lines, size of the opening, screw size, different font for the ש, etc.), send me some measurements and I'll see what I can do.
