A full size retro styled shelf. It does not need any glue (optional) or hardware parts (no metal screws or nuts). It can be printed on any “normal” sized printer like the Prusa MK3S. The parts are fixed together using dovetail joints and maggot screws (100% 3d printed). The top appliance can be configured.
The color change for the surface is optional. All together it takes about two 1kg spools of PLA. For the cheap prices of a kg it seems quite a good price for a full size shelf (not counting the joy of printing it yourself which is priceless).
The design was inspired by a shelf seen in a jumble sale.
Tips and notes for printing:
- Before you print the large parts please print the test parts to see if the design works on your printer. Test parts are test1.stl, test2.stl and one maggot.stl.
- I recommend a 0.6 nozzle. Most parts I made with 0.3 layer height.
- When slicing, put the scars in the screws in the little niches. That makes screwing much more pleasant.
- For all other parts avoid scars in the threads.
- The screws are intentionally printed extra. If the thread does not fit, you don't have to reprint the large parts, just the screws. If to tight or to loose simply apply a tiny scaling to the x and y axis while leaving z axis as it is.
- Print the screws with a layer height of 0.2 for a 0.6 nozzle .
- If you whish to make it more stable you can optionally apply glue.
- Depending on your printer it may be necessary to print a brim on high tubes. Also you can print two tubes and a screw1 and combine them.
- The screws for the legs I printed quite massive with 4 perimeters and 30% infill for better strength (six screws). The legs I printed with 3 perimeters and 20% infill.
- The threads in the main3, main4 and main5 part may need some cleaning. This is because the thread and tilt together make overhangs larger than 45°. However they printed fine on my machine.
- For all parts I used cubic infill.
- When fitting the main parts together it may be necessary to place the parts with the smooth face down on a flat surface and “hammer” them together with you hand.
- To fix the tube to the main part use screw3.
- To combine two tubes or a tube and the top use screw1.
- To combine two tubes with a platform in between use screw2.
- To fix the main parts together use the maggots.
- To combine the leg parts and the leg to the main part use also screw1.
- The main parts are assembled first main1 with main3. Then main2, main4 and main5. Then the two assemblies (see picture).
- Don't screw any of the screws to tight or they will break.
- Print the leg1 with the small end facing the print bed. This way the two flat surfaces from leg1 and leg2 will be screwed together and reduce the visible seam.
To print one shelf you need:
- 7x screw1
- 1x screw2
- 1x screw3
- 3x leg1 and leg2
- 1x top
- 1x platform
- 1x main1, main2, main3, main4 and main5
- 7x maggot
- 2x tube200
- Optionally add: 1x tube200, 1x screw2 and 1x platform to make it a bit bigger.
However the tubes can be printed in any lengths provided or combined to make it longer or shorter. Also you can print two or three platforms and add a tube and screw2 for each. Alternatively there is a second design platform2.
On one of the photos the original wood shelf can be seen with two platforms.
