Description

My local paper had a story about why many people are not wearing masks, and they interviewed a guy who said he "personally refused" to wear a mask because (to paraphrase) he was not at risk for anything, and felt that the risk was "minuscule". I don't get out much these days, but that seems to be a pretty commonly stated misunderstanding about mask wearing, which I have heard directly from about a half dozen people so far. It makes sense that people feel like masks are used to protect themselves, and so it would seem rational to think it's perfectly fine to risk their own life forinsert reason here. After all, it won't hurt anyone but themselves (and probably their family, friends, health care workers, company, employees, Medicare/Medicaid/The Evil Insurance Company, or the Hospital that may end up writing off the cost to save their life if they can't pay).

But the guidance has been to wear masks to protectthe other guy from COVID, which one may be unknowingly harboring.

I made this sign to nudge that point home. People don't like to wear masks, they are uncomfortable, and they can make communicating difficult, but they wear them for the other guy, not for themselves. Or in other words, they wear them because they care.

This was designed to be printed with the "text" part in 2 colors, with white as the uppermost layer, since the mask will be printed in the same color as the text. If slicing the "TEXT" part at 0.2mm layer height, then the transition to white will be at layer 10. The other parts have a small amount of extra space around them, but still may require some sanding to fit. My idea was to assemble the parts and glue them in place. The "BASE" holds everything and also provides the eyes and a border, so I had planned to print it in white as well. I use Gorilla Glue Clear Superglue to glue stuff like this and that is still the plan here. I am not sure however when or if I will get around to printing this, so if you do print it, please post a make and feedback so I can make any necessary corrections.

There is an alternate version of the base which has a hole for hanging it up (just use the file named "Covid-Mask_Sign2-U-BASE-w-ring.stl"), but it can otherwise be mounted using double sided tape. Feel free to remix it too, the STEP file is included to make that easier. This will fit on an Ender3.

Thanks and stay safe!

This has not been printed, and at this point I am not sure if I will, however if you do print it, please let me know how it worked and if you have any issues I will try and fix the model. I designed it with some clearance to allow the parts to fit but every printer is different and so some sanding may be needed. I am leaving it as a work in progress until or if I print it.
