Description

This is my artistic rendition of a Dilophosaurus skull. I tried to make it as realistic as possible with reference materials, but I'm not a paleontologistm so I wouldn't use it for serious business or research!

 

Printing instructions

Choose the size you want to print - full size (about 22 cm in length, approx. 1:3 of the real dinosaur size, fits Prusa MK3 bed), or half size. Download all files in the appropriate folder.

 

You need to will need to print the head, the jaw and two copies of the connector. 

 

The jaw can be easily printed teeth-up, with supports enabled.

The head is more tricky to print, since it has no flat surface - if you don't mind quite a lot of supports, I recommend this orientation, with organic support enabled.

 

 

I tried splitting both head and jaw into halves to minimize supports. The cuts are clearly visible in the green print on the model photo. This reduced the print time and material use a lot, but took more time to post-process properly.

 

After printing all the pieces, simply use the connectors to connect the head and jaw! The friction will be probably enough to hold the halves together, but you may want to use glue as needed.

 

My post processing

For my print, I used a flexible craft filler to fill in the gaps and try to cover some of the more pronounced layer lines. Then I used black primer spray to cover the whole model and acrylic brown paint to make the base color. Then I used watered-down black acrylic color as black wash to make the cavities more pronounced. Lastly, I layered different colors of dry brush paint for the teeth and on the various surfaces to make some color variations.
