Keep your filament Dry while printing.

We all know how important it is to keep our filament dry but it's a pain taking it in and out of the ziplock bag. What's more, while you're printing, your filament is exposed to the air. Nylon and PVA can start deteriorating within hours of exposure.

These rollers fit neatly into an IKEA box (Samla 39x28x28 #798.508.75). With a bit of weather stripping and lid clips you can print with filament directly out of the dry box and use the box as the retraction space when using a Multi-Material Unit (MMU).

There are two options for the dry box screws; the Festo Screw and the PTFE screw. The former has threads for screwing in a Festo connector and the later is just a 3mm hole that you can push a piece of PTFE tubing through.

Print instructions

You'll need to print two copies of the "All Pieces" stl.

You'll need to buy:

• IKEA box (SAMLA 39x28x28mm #798.508.75).
• Some weather stripping (foam or rubber, not brush).
• Colour indicating silica desiccant.
• Hydrometer (optional, but only £2.50 on Amazon)
• 16x 608 bearings (8x22x7) or use bearings from the MMU kit.
• 4x Festo couplers (optional)
• Some PTFE tubing or just cut a few cm off the long ones that came with the MMU2

Using the Festo connectors allows you to quickly disconnect your MMU2 from the box.

If using Festo connectors, screw the Festo connectors into the "Festo Screw" on the outside of the box and cut short (2-3cm) pieces of PTFE for the inside of the box to guide the filament.

If not using Festo connectors, replace the "Dry Box Festo Screw.stl" with "Dry Box PTFE screw.stl". The MMU PTFE tubing can then be pushed into the box.

Drill holes in the IKEA box about 9cm from the bottom and centered horizontally with the spools.

Use short pieces (2-3cm) of 1.75mm filament as pins to hold the axles in place. The holes are 2mm but you may need to drill them out.
