Description
This is a J1772 adapter dock for the Tesla Model Y. The dock is inserted into the rear of the door cubby and holds the charging adapter in a forward-facing orientation. Since the dock sits in the back of the cubby, it only takes up a small amount of space, and does not interfere with the use of the door cup holder. The adapter is held by tapered ribs, which ensure a tight fit regardless of printer tolerances to prevent rattle.
The development of this model wouldn't have been possible without @mitpatterson_6524, who tested and measured no fewer than four iterations of my design before it fit properly in their ‘23 Austin build Model Y, as well as provided the first two images. Big thank you to them for sticking with me through the design process, since I do not have access to a Model Y and couldn’t have made this any other way. Another big thank you to @acircleda_1814351 for test printing the final prototype for this model in their '22 Fremont MY and providing the final listing image on this model.
Printing
The model is designed to be printed face down as oriented in the STLs, and does not require support. I printed mine on low quality settings, since most surfaces of the model are not visible once installed except the one touching the print bed. There are versions for both the left and right front doors.
@mitpatterson_6524 recommends printing it with the “fuzzy skin” option in whatever slicer you may use, as that grabs onto the fabric liner of the door pocket and helps it stay in place.
Installation
The dock can adhered to plastic surfaces of the door with strips of 3M VHB tape. The rough side of adhesive Velcro may help it stick to the fabric as well. Testers have also had success installing it just as a friction fit piece.
