Description
This is a fly rod holder I designed for my truck. It is fairly specific since I originally didn't plan on sharing the plans but after a couple requests I decided I should upload them, so the only downside is the mounting mechanism I designed is made specifically for roof racks that utilize a 1x2" extruded aluminum cross tube with T slot holes. My rack is made by Sherpa Equipment Co. although I believe there are a few other manufacturers that make racks using the same cross bars. This model could probably be modified to fit other racks if you have some design skills.
The reel box hinges on the right side and uses a latch on the left side, I was worried about it coming unlatched unintentionally while driving so I created a key that I use as a safety to hold it close, I used a rubber band to keep the key hooked to the main box so it doesn't go missing. The hole the key goes through could also be uses with a small padlock to lock the box if needed.
I printed these in PETG-CF with 6 wall loops and 25% infill. Time will tell how the PETG-CF holds up to summer heat, if I have any troubles then I plan on switching to PET-CF for its better heat resistance. ASA could be a good option as well since its got better UV resistance.
Support is needed for most parts, the front and back half of the reel box I printed with the flat (closure side) down, and printed them on a raft with tree supports, the raft might not be needed since the supports will create a raft because the hinge ends up being the only part of the model touching the bed. The crossbar clamp I printed on its side with supports.
The holder is made to utilize 1.5in ABS pipe from your local hardware store. It also will require 4ea M4x16 socket head screws, some 4mm set screws (2 for each crossbar clamp you use and 1 for each tube cap), some ¼-20 heat inserts and ¼-20 thumb screws (one of each for each crossbar clamp)
