Description

Hi there, wonderful people!

One of the fun challenges with vase mode is features and detail into a design that don't necessarily feel like they can be part of a model that needs to stick to having a single perimeter with no holes or islands.

Those twirly frond-y bits have been on my mind for a while, but each feature that reaches out for a life of its own must do so at a forty-five degree angle both upwards and downwards, limiting the distance they can travel before shrinking to a point from above and below. Thus, the curls needed to be relatively tight in order to get some nice curving happening.

The secondary and tertiary swirls that branch off have the same proportions but start much later in their diminishment, mostly because there just isn't a lot of room in there for such tight curls to jostle against each other. Those secondary branches in particular are constructed so they reach towards the next curl over, but without quite reaching it.

Print Description

The Curlicue Vase is a vase mode print, so you'll want to set your slicer accordingly!

Print Dimensions

By default, the Curlicue Vase occupies 130mm x 117mm on the print bed and is 168mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

This one will happily scale up or down!

Print Orientation

Predictably enough, this one prints right-way-up :)

Further Thoughts

The proportions of the Curlicue Vase are intentionally broad and substantial, but this technique would work just as well with fine detail. Sharper detail would mean that the approach by which the swirls branch off each other could be extended to more levels in a fractal-ish recursion-ish kind of way... thinking face emoji goes here :D
