Description

Are you struggling to properly water your plants? Look no further, because I got your solution here!

This is a self watering semi hydroponic system that comes in various sizes! Water from the reservoir is transported to the roots by a wick. The floating indicator tells you when it's time to top up the reservoir.

Extra Material Needed

  • 10 mm (3/8“) rope as wick - I use polypropylene rope from the hardware store
  • Compatible substrate, e.g.:
    • Lechuza Pon
    • Leca
    • Perlite
    • Coco coir
    • whatever works for you

Assembly

  1. Print the parts (mind the recommended print settings for the floater below)
  2. Thread the wick through the holes in the pot
  3. Add your substrate and plant
  4. Fill reservoir a bit below ½ full
  5. While holding on to the water level indicator, place the pot on top the reservoir. Make sure the wick does not interfere with the floater!
  6. Done!

I recommend starting with the 125x125x125 mm sized model

All parts printed in PETG without supports

Reservoir

0.2 - 0.4 mm layer height - depending on the nozzle used (0.4-0.8 mm should all work)
2 perimeters
0-15 % infill
Optional: enable fuzzy skin (outside walls only) for a neat texture

Pot

0.2 mm layer height
2 perimeters

Floater

0.2 mm layer height
3 perimeters
0 % infill
print the floater slowly ensure it’s water tight

I made few sizes available as .3mf but if you know your way around fusion 360 the .f3d file allows you to change the width and height (parameters to change circled in red in the last image) to your desire and everything else should update accordingly.

Update:

Added a 2 mm ledge to the pot to make lifting it easier
Simplified the model and removed the unnecessary plug
Added drainage holes to the pot
