Mobile Tote Storage Rack - 17 Gallon Totes

I wanted a better way to store my 17 gallon totes, so I came up with this rack.  It's fairly easy to make and requires some 2x4s, screws and casters.  Here is a cut list (all pieces are assumed as 2x4s at nominal 1.5" x 3.5" unless otherwise specified):

• Horizontal Supports (5x) 82.5"
• Frame Connectors (6x) 19.75"
• Vertical Supports (10x) 67.25"
• Tote Runners (40x) 1.5" x 1.5" x 26.5"

You'll need about 8' 2x4s.  The horizontal pieces are cut down to 82.5", the cutoffs from these can be further cut down to use as spacers for the runners.  The vertical supports are cut to 67.25" and the cutoffs can be used for the runners (yielding 20 of the 40).  The rest of the runners can be cut from 8' boards, 7' studs could also be used if available for less waste.  The runners are ripped in half longways, so one 8' stud yields 6 runners.

I used pocket holes for all joints, except for the runners.  Here's a list of what I used:

• Massca Pocket Hole Jig (I really liked this, highly recommended)
• Pocket Hole Screws (2-½")
• 3" Locking Swivel Casters (you will need either 4 or 6 depending on how heavy your totes are)
• #8 2-½ Construction Screws (you will need around 100, since each runner uses 4)
• #8 1-¼" Construction Screws (for optional shelf-supports and casters)

For assembly, it's best to start with the frames first.  Cut pocket holes in the ends of all the vertical supports.  Attach horizontals to vertical pieces to make the two frames.  Lay one frame down on the ground and attach the frame connectors in the corners.  Then position second frame on top and connect everything, making sure to line things up.  Now you can attach the casters and stand the structure vertically.  Use spacers to align the runners.  Keep in mind the bottom runners are spaced differently than the others (see video for details).  Attach all the runners, then add the rear brace.  If you're adding the shelf up top, add the supports for that and load in the totes!
