Description
Welcome to Thailand!
Wat Chiang Man (sometimes written as Wat Chiang Mun) is a Buddhist temple inside the old city walls and moat of Chiang Mai, in northern Thailand. It was built by King Mengrai in 1297 CE as the first temple of his new capital city Chiang Mai (which transliterated means “City New”).
This model represents Chedi Chang Lom, the “Elephant Chedi”, the oldest construction within the temple complex. A chedi is a stupa or pyramidal buddhist construction typically built to house relics. The square base supports a second level which has the front half of 15 life-sized brick-and-stucco elephants emerging from it. The elephants seem to carry the upper levels of the building on their backs. The gilded upper part of the chedi contains a bell shaped relic chamber directly underneath the pinnacle (from Wikipedia).
This model was originally designed by Dany Sánchez in 2015 and has now been revamped in 2024 with much more detail and perfect optimization, including no supports.
