Description

These are small containers used for storing and dispensing giriko and fudeko (basically powders used to improve grip) in kyudo, Japanese archery. Once they have been filled, just turn the lid so that the small hole on the lid lines up with the painted dot on the main body and dispense the powder inside. Then turn the lid back to the side to close the hole again. The containers also have holes through the top and bottom for attaching a small string so they can hang from the tsurumaki (string holder) or wherever you prefer to keep them.

How to print:

  • I recommend printing these at 0.1 mm layer height or less. The black container pictured was printed at 0.2 mm, as you can see it has some striping on the body and the lid has a clear “staircase” instead of a rounded edge.
  • Concentric infill on the top and bottom will make for pretty surfaces.
  • Print one body and one lid. I suggest printing the lid with supports and the top up, this way you can use ironing for a perfect surface.
  • Sand down the inside of the lid a little bit if the fit is too tight.
  • Paint the dot groove of the main body to make lining up the holes easier. Vermillion would be very traditional, here I have used gold-color (acrylic) paint. The dot is quite small, I used a tooth pick to paint it.
  • Glue the cut-out flower pieces into the lid. Fit should be quite tight, but not tight enough to skip the glue.
  • Thread a piece of string through the holes for easy carrying. I used a 2 mm nylon cord in the pictures, as you can see there is space for something slightly thicker too. Secure it with a knot, or add a bead if you prefer.

Styling choices :)

I don't do kyudo myself, so please correct me if I got this wrong but from what I've heard the containers should be styled differently to tell them apart easily. Traditionally the container for giriko would be the one either darker/black or more decorated or bigger. For beginners, transparent containers are sometimes used to make it easier to tell the powders apart, although I have yet to try printing these in a transparent filament.
