Description

That's no moon…

--PROJECT STARDUST--

It is MiniWorld3D's 10th Year Anniversary! On this festive occasion, we celebrate Star Wars Day of May 4th with the most iconic landmark/locale in the series: the Death Star. There have been 3D printable models of the Death Star since the early days of Thingiverse, so we sought out to create something unique and give it the MiniWorld3D seal of quality, an elegant model for a more civilized age.

-----

As the protagonists quickly find out after confusing it for a small moon, the Death Star is a space station and superweapon. Constructed by the Galactic Empire, it is capable of obliterating entire planets, and serves to enforce the Empire's reign of terror.

Appearing in the original 1977 film Star Wars, the Death Star serves as the central plot point and setting for the movie, and is destroyed in an assault by the Rebel Alliance during the climax of the film, with the 2016 prequel film Rogue One and the 2022 television series Andor exploring its construction.

Since its first appearance, the Death Star has become a cultural icon and a widely recognized element of the Star Wars franchise (from Wikipedia).

MiniWorld3D is happy to bring these models to life for all StarWars fans on May the Fourth! Please give credit, we made this model from scratch by hand and brain, it's all about spreading culture and education!

Info & Printing Tips

90 mm diameter at 100% scale.

No supports.

For better details, print slow, such as 15 or 20mm/s for outer perimeters.
Fine-tune retraction to avoid stringing.
Perimeters: 2
Top layers: at least 3
15% infill, lightning pattern ok.
No brims or rafts, except for the individual dish parts for the exploded view.

Input shaper ok.

Two versions & a stand base provided:

  1. Regular, full spherical model, can be printed in two halves without supports and then glued together.

  2. Cutout and exploded version, showing the inner workings and assemble of the dish. Also print each half without supports (proven), and the dish parts individually standing up with the lower flat side on the print bed (see picture below for suggested orientation). Brim recommended only for the dish parts.

Showing orientation only, it is suggested to print parts separately to give them unique settings and minimize stringing.

To assemble, line up and glue both halves of the sphere, and then introduce a long, thin object where the beam would come out of. Insert the dish parts, starting with the smaller and ending with the largest. You can also glue everything without the need for an inserted structural rod.
At 100% scale, the orifice is 0.8mm , scale up if needed.

  3. Stand base, meant to hold the sphere like a golf tee, it is designed to be printed with clear filament so you can put a light LED base underneath. Try transparent red, green or blue filament for a hologram effect.
