Description

There are a few components to this, along with a couple custom PCBs for usb cable minification. All usb is 2.0 on this build. The power / battery pisugar board has been HEAVILY modified to keep the build as slim as possible.  I removed the included pisugar battery, soldered a jst connector + dupont silicon wires to the required pads for an external momentary button to use as a power switch.

  • 3.5" screen: 2000mah lipo battery (803860) / 4.0" screen: 3500mah lipo battery (933871)
  • Momentary power button
    • 10k ohm resistor *1 + circuitboard pcb for button LED wire. soldered 1 male dupont pin to each end of the resistor.
  • 4 port retrocution usb hub
  • blackberry keyboard
  • hyperpixel 3.5" screen (800x480) or hyperpixel 4.0" screen
  • Pisugar 3
  • usb 2.0 female breakout board
  • male micro usb breakout board
  • male usb C breakout *2
    • To pisugar and to blackberry keyboard. I ordered a custom pcb design of this from jlcpcb, but you can find this on aliexpress.
  • female usb C breakout
    • I ordered this from aliexpress. You only need +V and GND broken out so you can feed power to the pisugar for battery recharge.
  • m2 8mm countersunk screws *8
  • m2 10mm female standoffs *4
  • 3.5" screen: m2.5 12mm countersunk screws *4
  • 4.0" screen: m2.5 15mm countersunk screws *2
    • i cut down 2 16mm m2.5 screws - otherwise, these would drive into the back of the screen.

You may need custom pcbs for the male and female usb-c breakouts. If needed, those can be printed by pcbway or jlcpcb.  The section for the buttons above the blackberry keyboard uses a simple custom pcb. The button PCB literally only has 2 buttons - the breakout / pads need to be soldered to wire on one end, with the other ends on the pcb button mount points.

Note: if you have a hyperpixel 3.5 and try to assemble this, keep in mind that the screen driver is not supported by any version of debian higher than buster. For the 4.0" screen, I used the pi 4 driver on the zero 2 w and told debian desktop to rotate display 90 degrees.

Builds shown used plain black PLA for button caps and Form Futura silk yellow PLA for shell.  Assembly steps shown in pics.
