Description
Butterfly houses, often referred to as butterfly hotels or butterfly boxes, are still relatively unknown.
For the colorful butterflies, a protective habitat is just as important for survival as food. Just like other insects, butterflies need a place where they are safe from the wind and weather as well as from predators. Some species such as the peacock butterfly, the lemon butterfly or the small fritillary also like to use the butterfly house for hibernation.
The structure of a butterfly house is similar to a bird nesting box. The longitudinal slits in the front, which serve as an entrance for the butterflies, are important. They should be 10-15 cm long and 1-2 cm wide.
Leaves, moss, tree bark, brushwood or branches and twigs with a diameter of approx. 5 mm are suitable fillings - the butterflies can easily cling to them. As long as the material is fresh, you can press it into the house. However, leave enough space for the new inhabitants and make sure that the filling does not cover the entrance holes.
Sweeping once a year with a hand brush is sufficient. Under no circumstances should you use chemical cleaning agents.
The butterfly hostel should be placed in as bright a location as possible, but not exposed to the blazing sun. A house wall with a roof overhang that also protects the box from rain and wind is ideal. Trees or shrubs are also suitable if they are protected from the wind. Proximity to flowering plants is important. Attach the butterfly house at a sufficient height so that four-legged hunters - e.g. cats - cannot reach it.
The butterfly hostel consists of three elements: Basket, roof and optional landing pads.
I printed all parts using PETG.
It's very simple, the elements can be plugged in directly. The roof clamps a little so that it is not torn away by the wind. This should not be glued so that the hostel can be cleaned later.
Looking forward your makes, feedback and modifications!
