Description

The idea

I love the beautiful and optimized shape of the engine cladding of a modern commercial aircraft. I also love the beautiful and optimized shape of a "Kuksa", a traditional Nordic handmade wooden cup. What could be more obvious than combining the two ?

The model consists of a printed cup, a (not really) optional inner stainless steel cup and an optional stainless steel washer that can be inserted during printing. In combination with the stainless steel cup it gives the mug a nice and "real" weight and a lower center of mass. However, it works perfectly even without the washer.

If the cup is printed with an FDA-compliant (food safe) filament, it could theoretically be used without the inner metal cup. For easier cleaning, handling and safety reasons, I strongly recommend using the inner cup though. In addition, this stainless steel is redolent of the engine cowling.

Filament

If you use the inner metal cup, ASA and ABS are fine (or PETG and even PLA, but not for hot drinks or the dishwasher!). I printed my mugs with extrudr Greentec Pro (not the CF variant). This filament is FDA certified and has a heat distortion resistance up to 160 °C Vicat A/115 °C HDT/B. This should not cause any problems even in the dishwasher.
Keep in mind that the heat resistance of a filament is directly related to the wall thickness!

Printing

Since I also use the mug for hot coffee, I printed it with “cubic” infill for a better thermal insulation. I recommend 0.16 mm layer height for a nice surface (if you are in a hurry, you should also be able to use 0.2 mm) and at least 3 wall loops (at least 6 if you want to use it for hot drinks). 10 or 12% cubic infill are  fine. If you trust your good printer and do not print at high speed, you should be able to do without supports. If you are unsure, you can use light “tree” support in the two handle holes.

To get a nice smooth surface on the top of the handle, I used variable layer height in this area. Make sure to not include the handle holes if you plan to use supports.

Stainless steel cup

I used these - please check the measurements (350 ml is not correct, the actual volume is ~275 ml)

Stainless steel washer (optional)

after slicing the model, you have to add a pause at the top of the recess to be able to insert the washer during printing.

I used size M16 - please check the measurements
