Description
If you want to mod a launch model SCPH-3000x PS2 e. g. with a silent fan, you need an adapter to mount the fan. Unfortunately there is no other solution for the oldest PS2 systems, because the piece, where the fan sits in place, can't be detached.
This is a very simple screw-on adapter for 60x60x15mm or 60x60x10mm fans.
I designed two variants:
Fan Adapter 1,5mm → Use with 60x60x10mm fans (thicker adapter for thiner fan)
Fan Adapter 1,0mm → Use with 60x60x15mm fans (thiner adapter for thicker fan)
The thickness of 1,5mm for a 60x60x15mm fan is slightly too much. If you want to use it, you need to cut or file down a piece of plastic inside of the PS2. It's already a very thight fit with the 1mm adapter.
If you want to reuse the shielding on the fan, cut out a small piece of metal on both sides, where the mounts are located (see picture).

Replacement fan decission:
The original PS2 is using a 7V fan, but it's nearly impossible to find a good one with that voltage. Besides that the console's fan is supplied only with 5V unless a HDD is in use. If you play games via HDD the fan will spin up because the full 7V are supplied.
Two ways to pursue:
1. Use a 12V fan with voltage regulator:
If you want it silent take this option, although depending on the fan, it could result in less cooling. Buy a small voltage regulator and make sure it can handle different input voltages (5V and 7V). I used these for my PS2. Connect a JST SH 1mm cable to the mainboard an solder it to the input pads on the voltage regulator. Be careful with the polarity, because you can't trust the wire colors of the aftermarket cables (Original fan cable: gray → positive, black → negative). Then solder the wires of the new fan to the output pads. Now you have to decide, which voltage you want to output to the fan (8V, 9V or 12V). In that case the fan runs constantly with the same speed, no matter if you play from disc or HDD.
2. Use a 5V fan directly:
This is the “easier” way, although depending on the fan, it might not be as silent. The only thing you need to do, is soldering a JST SH 1mm cable to the fan directly or to the fan's wires. Be careful with the polarity, because you can't trust the wire colors of the aftermarket cables (Original fan cable: gray → positive, black → negative). Now the fan spins with full speed permanently and when using the HDD it will spin even faster, what can result in a shorter lifespan.
Decission is your's…
