Description

It's a 3D-printed bearded iris flower… and also it holds pens.

I've been tossing this idea back and forth for a while: outer petals (sepals) that start on the print bed and connect with the flower midway, for both print efficiency and stability for the pen stand so it doesn't over-balance; and the ruffles in the upper petals double as space for the pens to rest in.

It holds 3-4 pens or pencils comfortably, depending on their size. (It can probably also hold things of similar size and shape. I would caution against anything that requires cleaning, although maybe if you opened up the bottom 🤔)

To print:

  • PLA
  • 3 perimeters
  • 0.2mm or 0.1mm layer height
    • Or a combination. The bottom cm or so benefits the most from the extra layer height detail at 0.1mm, imo.
  • 0.4mm line width (+ I've only tested printing this model with Classic slicing, not Arachne)
  • 15% infill
  • NO supports; no brim
  • Bridging settings
  • For best results, I recommend using the Seam Painting feature to block seams along the ‘edges’ of the bottom centimeter or so; they're overhangs, but PrusaSlicer will want to put the seams there because they're the most corner-like area. You can also download the .3mf file for pre-painted seam blocks. (I found these overhangs to print best at the highest temperature for your particular filament that you can go before stringing becomes a problem.)

The filaments shown in the photos are MatterHackers Magenta PLA and Atomic Filament Baby Blue V2 PLA.

This model is available through both direct purchase and paid membership in my Printables club. For commercial licensing, you'll want to look at the Commercial Tier of my club.
