Gauge for heavy rain

Use case

This rain gauge has a relatively small inlet compared to the diameter of the measuring tube below. The diameter factor is sqrt(2)=1.4142, which corresponds to a surface factor of 2. Consequently 10 liters/m² of rain, which would be 10mm, leads to 20mm on the scale. Most commercial rain gauges, at least here in Germany, have a relatively large inlet and therefore range only up to 35 liters/m², while being a lot bigger. For heavy rain, this relatively small gauge is by far precise enough while taking less space and ranging up to 50 liters/m².

Printing

The parts are relatively easy to print. No supports are needed. I recommend a brim for the gauge, but it might work without as well. As material I recommend PETG for the clamps, to give them the needed springiness. For the gauge I have used transparent (clear) PETG, but clear PLA should work as well.

Markings

I have used an Edding3000 pen (Sharpy) to colorize the text and the marker lines. That is not absolutely needed but makes it easier to read the gauge. 

Assembly

The clamps are made to be secured with zip ties to a fence post or any other object in your garden. Thanks to their V-shape on the backside, they can be mounted both to flat and round surfaces of basically any diameter. 

Once the clamps are zip-tied to an object, simply snap the gauge in. To empty it, it can be snapped out and in easily.
