Description

This model is a recirculating air filter using activated carbon pellets and two 5015 blowers.  The screen components have honeycomb infill and were printed with only perimeter layers,  no top or bottom layers. I built this for use within a Qidi XMax-3 while printing ASA material.

Overall dimensions are 94mm tall, 130mm wide and 57.6mm deep.  The media compartment internal dimensions are 45mm x 51.5mm x 124mm, providing a volume of roughly 287cc.

Components of the model include:   TopScreen, BottomScreen, FilterBody, FanMount and FanMountCap.  Components are assembled using M3 cap head screws.

The “screens”  retain the activated carbon pellets in the FilterBody.  The models are shown as solid.  The perforations are created by printing the screen components without top or bottom layers.  Doing so exposes the infill pattern.  I used “honeycomb” infill.  Use a fairly high number of perimeter layers as these create the support structure.  Infill sizing is dependant on the size of the filter media.  I used 4mm activated carbon pellets and sized my infill accordingly.

Be careful not to use acid activated carbon pellets.  These can cause oxidation of exposed metal parts.   I used the following without issue:  https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B07XF911MY

I have no way of knowing if the formulation has changed after my purchase.   I would suggest testing, by exposing uncoated carbon steel to the media for a period of time (days?) and checking for rust formation, before use inside a printer enclosure.

No supports should be required during printing.

When assembling, the BottomScreen component fits inside the FilterBody component.  The TopScreen component is attached to the Filter Body component using M3 screws after filling the FilterBody component with media.

Two 5015 blowers are attached to the FanMount component using four M3 screws. The FanMount component is attached to the  FilterBody component using five M3 screws.  The FanMountCap component is attached using four M3 screws in the corners.   When installing the 5015 blowers, I used CA glue and paper towel material at fan wiring attachment point as strain relief. This was a personal choice and is not required.  Wiring was routed out through the hole in the FanMount component between the blower outputs.  I did not make any provision for placing a switch on the filter.

Periodically replace the media by removing the TopScreen component to dump old media and load fresh.

Fusion 360 source and .STEP files are included.
