Description
This design protects the tail light LEDs on the Team Associated Pro4 SC10. The truck comes stock with the LED leads bent at 90 degrees and wires tied tightly to the bumper assembly, which makes them prone to damage. There is no slop in the wiring when the bumper is bent/deformed in a crash, and so mine were torn off on one side. Normally LEDs come with their leads exiting straight out of the package, and so these guards allow the leads to remain straight while being protected in a crash. The wires can also have some excess length, and so this design has been working very well for me at the indoor dirt track in some rough practice sessions. (I also sawed off the stock mud guards, as they constantly would become torn and probably don't have much of a functional purpose.)
The design is in two pieces, the ‘base’ and the ‘cap’. The base is what holds the LED into the bumper using the stock M2.5 screw (although a longer screw will be more secure). And the cap piece attaches over the base with an additional 6mm M3 socket cap screw.
So the hole in the base should be tapped with an M3 tap, but you might get away without doing this:
Installation is quite easy, starting with inserting the new rear LED into the bumper as per normal, but putting it through the large hole in the cap piece first:
Then the base piece can be put on (again a longer M2.5 screw is helpful to be more secure) to hold the LED in place:
Then the cap piece can be screwed into place with the M3 screw:
In terms of printing, I used Hatchbox black PETG and placed the pieces as shown to minimize the supports needed (just the LED mounting hole in the base piece):
So far, these little tail light pods have been working well and have survived a few really hard practice sessions at the indoor dirt track. Enjoy!
