Description

This type of bottle opener is very reliable and it only broke after close to a decade of use.

The replacement is only $32 on Amazon.  But if you have an anti-consumption mindset, this kit will allow you to repair yours for less than 50 cents USD in plastic and hopefully you have some glue lying around.  Otherwise is about $10 for a new glue tube.

More about the failure condition.  The handles are supposed to be pressed by hand to hug the tip of the bottle.  After several uses the pin that holds the handle will press against the plastic part and it will break.  Once the pin is lose the opener will not work.

If that happens, make sure to recover the spring for the repair to return the part to its original behavior.

There are three parts in total:

The cylinder:  Use this to protect the cylinder where the pin goes.  it protects the opening so the epoxy glue does not spill into it.

The plug:  This replaces the original plug that keep the pins from getting out and also ensure the pins are in the correct position so they don't leverage against the plastic part and break it.

The jacket:  The jacket is added to give additional support and prevent the fail condition from happening again.

Print the parts.  Set lots of perimeters, 6.  Make sure the part is printed such that the filament circles around the cork screw opener.  This will give the highest strength.  I used PLA for my repair,  PLA is very strong, the only issue is that it is brittle.  I thing PETG or ASA would work okay too.  I think all part can be printed with .4 mm nozzle.  I printed the plugs in 0.25 mm nozzle because of misunderstanding.  If you try .4 and it fits, let the community know please.

Dry fit parts to make sure everything will fall in place once you do it again with glue.  Open and close the screw, simulating the motion to open a bottle to make sure the repair part does not block the action.  It works on my opener, but there could be small differences from one opener to the other.

First inspect the broken part.  Insert the cylinder in the hole and apply epoxy glue to the broken part.  Make sure no resign gets inside the cylinder, since that is where the pin will go.

Then apply more epoxy glue to the outside of the plastic part where the jacket will go.

The plug have enough pressure that they will not fall off so no glue should be needed.  if you do need some glue, add just a bit of super glue to hold it but not too much in case you need to disassemble the part in the future.
