Description

UPDATE: I have been unable to find this deodorant recently and I am unsure if it has been discontinued. If you are currently using this design with another deodorant brand, please let me know so I can use it too :P.

If you're anything like me, you are concerned about the environment and our impact on it. I try to switch to no-single-use-plastic packaging as much as possible but sometime these products come at the expense of more modern conveniences. A great example of this is the new Old Spice deodorant sticks with zero plastic in the packaging. This is a great product beyond it's environmental benefits - it is made without aluminum (which has been linked to Alzheimer's) and while it is not an antiperspirant it holds up to my stress sweat like nothing I've used before. The down side? There is no plunger to lift the deodorant up as it gets used up - you are simply expected to keep pushing it up from the bottom. This can get a bit tedious as every morning when I would go to put my deodorant on, I would find that the stick had slid back down overnight and I would have to press it back into a position where it was usable again. A small price to pay to reduce my impact but an inconvenience never the less.

Enter: The Old Spice Deodorant Stick Lifter!

Now I can crank my deodorant up to where I need it and still find it there the next morning! No fiddling around trying to press a small cardboard circle up inside a cardboard tube any more! And the best part? It's completely reusable! Simply unscrew the cuff and make sure the gripper arms are clear and the lifter is fully retracted, the old tube should slide right off making room for the new tube! Once the new tube is in place, tighten down the cuff until it clicks over the detente at the end of the threading and you're ready to continue deodorizing! The new tube should start in a ready position but once you're ready to start lifting, just turn the twist-handle clockwise (from the top) and have more product at your finger tips.

You will only need to use supports for the "D.S. Lifter Body," everything else should print well without them.

You should set your slicing tolerance to "Exclusive" for all of these parts. This will make sure there is enough clearance around the threaded parts as well as the print-in-place joints.

I would recommend setting a slight hole off set for the "Lifter" and "Cuff" parts. You can also use a small hole offset for the "twist handle" if you're concerned about the hole being too tight or you can aim for a nice interference fit like I did.

Assembly

Once you have all of the parts printed, follow these instructions for assembly.

  1. Carefully remove the support material from the "D.S. Lifter Body" and make sure the individual gripper arms can move freely.
  2. Start by threading the "Cuff" over the "D.S. Lifter Body" from the bottom. Keep turning the "Cuff" until it leaves the threads and is sitting above them.
  3. Push the hexagonal end of the "Inner Screw" through the inside and out the bottom of the "D.S. Lifter Body." Make sure that the round section is fitted into the hole and that it can turn freely.
  4. Mate the hexagonal pin in the bottom of the "Inner Screw" to the corresponding hole in "Twist Handle." If you need to use glue you may want to place a folded piece of paper or playing card between the "Twist Handle" and the "D.S. Lifter Body" as a shim to ensure there will be enough space for the parts to move.
  5. Once the "Twist Handle" is in place thread the "Lifter" onto the "Inner Screw" lining it up to fit inside the "D.S. Lifter Body" and tighten it in all the way. Do not over tighten as this will likely shear off the "Inner Screw" from the "Twist Handle."
  6. Push your deodorant up until it is about 5mm above the top of the tube. Place the assembled "O.S. Deodorant stick lifter" in the bottom of the tube until the bottom of the tube meets the lip of the the "D.S. Lifter Body."
  7. Tighten the "Cuff" onto the threading until you feel it click over the ball detente at the end of the threaded section. You are now ready to use your "O.S. Deodorant Stick Lifter"
  8. When it's time to change the deodorant stick, retract the "Lifter" all the way back and loosen the "Cuff" toward the top until it is free of the threading. You can now remove the old deodorant stick and replace it with your new one. Re-tighten the "Cuff" as described in step seven and you are ready to go once again!
