Description

Howdy, wonderful people!

I enjoy making vase mode models that comprise multiple parts, but actually getting the parts to stay together is always a conundrum. I'll often just have parts slip in from above and rely on gravity to hold things in place, but for this model I wanted clean and neat results that were only going to come from having parts join from underneath.

This sci-fi-ish-looking flask has four voids around the outside, into which fit separately-printed vase mode panels, which slide in through gaps on the underside. In the photos you'll notice an angled bump on the panels, at the centre of the base of the side panel.

If you take a look at the underside of the main body, you'll find a channel into which that bump will fit nicely. The bump is kept centred and much smaller than the full-width channel in the main body because you'll need to flex the main body outwards gently so that the side panel can slide in and be locked in place.

You might also notice that the panel gets wider at the bottom, but that's purely for the sake of printability, to provide a more secure footing on the print bed!

Print Description

These are vase mode prints, so set your slicer accordingly!

Print Dimensions

The main body occupies 85mm x 85mm on the print bed and is 133mm tall.

Supports Needed?

Not at all!  Designed for straightforward printing!

Scalability

This one should scale well either up or down!

Print Orientation

Both elements print right-way-up.

Further Thoughts

There is one puzzle related to this that I've contemplated for a long time - I wonder if this could be done with one single insert, rather than four disconnected ones?

It's tempting to say that all the panel chambers could just be connected, but that would not in fact work at all, as there'd be a solid wall between the (one single piece) insert and the outside world, with no opportunity to contrive a hole through which to see it...

Maybe I'll come up with an approach to that one one day... in the meantime, happy printing!

xoxo

Sven.
